Woodpro will substitute our standard 1/2" veneer core plywood that we use for vanity sides with a MDF core plywood if our plywood supplier should ever run out. ( we have had to do this in the past ). We do NOT use an inferior product as the newer MDF core plywood is now considered a better core than the traditionally used ply core.

Expanded Answer The main advantages to the MDF core are:

  • The core is more stable – it doesn’t move
  • MDF has no core transfer.  With ply core we have to watch for any “core transfer” - where a darker vein in the inside ply core or a “football” filled void would show through, especially on light stained or painted cabinets.   Often we would have to set aside plywood sides that showed core transfer or showed a filled void and use these sides for darker stained cabinetry where the core transfer wouldn’t show.  With MDF core this is not a problem.
